The fans work, the diagnostic turned them on briefly, they just never turn on in normal operation because it keeps being throttled before even getting anywhere warm.ĭoes anyone have an idea on how I could fix this? As it's a few years old, bringing it in to repair would probably cost more than than the laptop's current value (and they'd just say "it be wet, lol nope" anyway"). My layman guesswork is that it's being wrongfully thermal throttled, even though the machine stays perfectly cool below 50 ☌. I've ran the Apple diagnostic (boot and hold D) and it told me it found no issues. It also feels like the performance difference is much bigger than what you'd expect for 0.6GHz vs. No idea if that's the SSD (or other parts) being slow too or if it's caused by FDE. Curiously, other operations are pretty slow too, even just opening a folder in finder takes much longer than it should. However, I'm not sure if that's the only thing that gets throttled. Whenever it scales the frequency up even a bit everything runs smoothly. The stuttering appears perfectly correlated to it being stuck at the lowest frequency. I think I also got it to go up to about 3GHz yesterday but can't get it to that today. I've checked the CPU frequency and it appears that when it's stuttering the CPU is throttled to 600MHz: The difference is readily apparent when doing a three finger swipe to change virtual desktops, it's either smooth as butter or it stutters. It randomly alternates between running perfectly fine, no issues whatsoever, and slowing to a crawl. I thought it's fine after hanging it to dry, but there's intermittent problems. Also seemed to run without graphics acceleration or something like that. 1.5h later I tried to turn it on and it booted extremely slowly. Immediately dried it off, shut it down, and placed it next to the heater to dry for a bit. I spilled a glass of water over the MacBook. As I've posted over in the Status thread, I messed up my MacBook (Air said in The Official Status Thread:
